The QUICK What and Why of Pilates
Joseph Pilates was a genius, and many variations of today’s Pilates have stemmed from his Contrology work. The Stott Method, Created by Moira Merrithew, is a modernized, contemporary, brilliantly biomechanical based form of Pilates, where new understanding of science and anatomy allows people of all ages, shapes, and sizes, to heal, strengthen, lengthen, and gain local stability and control of their bodies. Think … cross training, for the athlete, but also for you and me … in the name of longevity.
One of the most exciting benefits of Pilates is the ability to target and manage the core in a deeper strengthening way, which is key for posture and balance and over all body alignment as we age. With better core strength, we can alleviate discomfort and prevent injury. If you are like me with a spine injury or other chronic pain, Pilates will educate your muscles in how to move more efficiently, improve your core strength, bolster your entire body with proper mechanics and healthy alignment, and will make you wish you knew about Joe a long time ago.
I love Pilates because you can show up exactly how you are. Whether you’re new to fitness, returning to fitness after an injury or postpartum, or just looking to add the cherry on top of your robust wellness regime, Pilates is for everyone. We can ALL enjoy benefits such as improved flexibility, bone density, joint health, mental health, mind - body connection, breathing, and even help with managing perimenopausal symptoms like fatigue and joint pain. Since this season of our lives demands a balance of hormones, Pilates 2- 3 times a week is perfect for helping us tone and strengthen without over doing our adrenals. As I mentioned, there are a lot of Pilates variations out there, so know before you go, what you want out of it, and what you can expect from that particular class or session.
My hope is to include Pilates as part of my fitness regime for the rest of my days, it’s that good. I would love to hear about your Pilates experience, your comments and questions are always welcome, and if you’re near Portland make sure to reach out, I would love to meet you on the mat.
